I realized recently that I am obese. I knew that I was overweight, but now I have accepted that I am not just overweight – I am obese. I am not blaming anybody or anything – this is my doing – I am simply saying that it has come to a point where I have to do something about it before it is too late.
Twenty years ago, I was at the same point I’m at today. My belly was bigger than a semi-truck. But I made a decision and lost 120 pounds.
Today, I am back at the same exact point I was at then. But since I already lost all the weight once, I know it can be done. Now it is time to do it again.
DAY 0 - Making My Weight Loss Plan
Professionals say there are two main factors to losing weight. I am not going to argue with them because I am not a professional in the weight-loss field. But I do have previous experience, so I need to come up with a game plan for my weight-loss process.
According to my weight, which is showing at the scary number of 322.6 lbs /146.33 kg,
I need to lose at least 125 lbs / 57 kg.
I am 49, which means that my normal calorie intake should be around 2,000 calories if I am moderately moving throughout the day. Since I work on the computer the entire day, I am lacking exercise. So I deducted 200 calories for lack of movement, which then places me at the required 1,800 calories a day.
To safely lose one pound a week, according to Google, I need to create a 500-calorie deficit a day in my diet. But the important thing is to keep my daily calorie intake above 1,200 calories a day so I don’t need to ask a doctor to monitor my diet.
Next up is coffee. Coffee is my favorite drink, and I drink at least three cups a day. According to Google, one cup of coffee with one teaspoon of sugar and vitamin D milk is:
2 cal. (cup of coffee) + 16 cal. (1 tsp of sugar) + 19 cal. (vit. D milk) = 37 cal.
37 cal. x 3 times a day = 111 cal.
This leaves me with a window of 1,089 calories (1,200 – 111) that I am allowed to eat daily.
This means I can have a 300-calorie breakfast, a 500-calorie lunch, and 250-calorie supper (plus/minus).
Of course each meal is different and may vary. For example, lunch won’t always be 500 calories. It might be 560 calories sometimes or 460 calories other times. As long as I stay in range, I should be fine.
Hopefully, within a year, I will lose 52 pounds. Fifty-two weeks in a year – one pound a week would be terrific!
That’s the plan!
Getting the Proper Food
The next thing I need to take care of is my food supply, especially since I know I won’t have time to prepare dishes and portions with the proper quantity of calories. Since I’ll need to procure dishes that are easy to warm up and ready to eat, I decided to purchase meals for an entire week. As far as the brand, I don’t have a preference, so I’m going to try different food suppliers to see which one I might like the most.
The first one I’m going to try is RealEats.com. I liked ordering from this website because, when you click on a picture of a meal, you can see the calorie content right away:
For the first week, I ordered six meals:
I also added breakfast for the entire week (300 calories per meal):
For supper, I’ve decided to eat fruit and veggies to keep my diet simple. I can keep the calorie count very low for fruit because none of it will exceed 100 calories. I figure that, even if I eat two or three pieces, I should be fine. For example, an apple three inches in diameter is 95 calories and a three-inch orange is 65 calories.
The last thing I had to do was enter my payment information:
Voilà, the order is done! Perfect! And super simple.
Below is my confirmation page:
The food I ordered will arrive in one week.
I logged in to my account and cancelled the additional weeks of food deliveries because I want to try their meals out first. All I had to do was “skip” three weeks:
Now, time to be patient and wait for my food to arrive!
My Food Arrived
My food arrived from RealEats.com as planned in a 12 in. x 12 in. x 14 in. box delivered to my house by UPS. The food was not frozen, just cold. I found three packs of ice inside the box in a thermo bag.
Here is a video of me unpacking my first food delivery:
DAY 1 - My Diet Just Started Today
My diet started TODAY. Right away, I had to make a little adjustment to the diet because of the nature of the RealEats.com meals and conditions in my office.
The meals come in vacuum bags, and they need to be boiled for six minutes. In my office, there is no cooktop, just a microwave, so I decided to switch breakfast with supper. Sure, you can microwave the packages, but I don’t like this idea.
So now, for breakfast, I will be eating salads and fruit, and for supper, I will be eating the hashbrowns and stuff, which, by the way, I don’t mind.
My Breakfast
For breakfast, I made the choice to go with the tropical fruit salad offered by a local store:
Cooking my RealEats.com Lunch
Cooking lunch is very straightforward. You just boil the water and insert the packaged food into the boiling water for six minutes. Then you serve it on a plate, and voilà! The food tastes really good, and I feel satisfied by the quantity of food.
Cooking my RealEats.com Dinner
So, here is my “breakfast” for dinner:
Conclusion
Now that I have my plan in place, all I need to do is stick to the plan and see if it works.
The food delivered by RealEats.com is excellent, and most importantly, the quantity is adequate for my diet.
I have to wait at least a week to see if my new diet and the new system I’ve put in place is going to work.
Patience…
